Season's Message
With the Christmas season upon us and a potentially very snowy end to 2010, on behalf of the Chairman and the executive, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your fantastic efforts this year. The Gambia United Society will enter 2011 in a stronger position, both in terms of strategy and reputation. This is all down to the commitment and support of colleagues across the Charity.
We began the year with the electing a new executive to steer the affairs of the Society and ending it in a challenging way by re-organising our strategic vision. I would particularly like to thank colleagues on the executive for their wonderful ideas all geared towards improving our organisational effectiveness as we progress to the next level in the best interest of the wider Gambian Community both in the UK and The Gambia.
I would like to briefly share with you our key 2010 achievements. In August, we introduced a voluntary trust fund for the members. The purpose of the fund is to help send dead bodies of our loved ones who die in the UK. However, the beneficiaries must be paid up and agree to the ideals of the charity. Also September 2010, the harsh weather in The Gambia threw us a challenge soliciting our solidarity and support. We passed the test, despite the current economic climate that affects everyone. The Society raised £600 including its own contribution of £500. We collected varying items, i.e. clothing and school materials worth more than £2,000 received from individuals who do not want to be named, the Metropolitan Police and schools. We say thank you for your maximum support and look forward to your continuous involvement in the future. Special thanks to the online media, notably Gainako, Jollof news and Hellogambia for their support in disseminating our initiative.
These achievements were possible through the hard work of colleagues across the Society and well wishers like those listed above. 2011 will certainly have its own challenges but I believe that we will tackle them with our characteristic determination and initiative. It is certain that we will need more creativity if we are to ensure that we maintain the standard of organisational culture and quality service delivery in the best interest of our target community in the coming year and beyond. In this direction, we will utilise to the maximum the high quality experience of our senior members of the charity during these trying times.
It now remains for me to wish you and your families a very happy and peaceful Christmas and all the very best for the New Year.
Sulayman Bah, Secretary General
