Our Malaria Prevention Project
The Gambia United Society supports the fight against malaria in the Gambia. Malaria without doubt is the major killer of children under five years and pregnant women in the Gambia, with over one thousand deaths each year, majority of them in these two groups. Gambia National Malaria Control Programmed recent statistics, indicates that between one thousand to two thousands children in the Gambia die each year as a result of malaria. And, a significant number of the children who do survive an episode of severe malaria have brain damage”.
In 2007 the GUS raised £5,000.00 to purchase and donate long lasting insecticide mosquito nets to the most vulnerable group.
As part of the fundraising activities, Jaliba Kuyateh, a renowned Gambian musician and his band agreed to tour Europe for us, during which Gambian culture was widely promoted.
The nets were distributed in The Gambia by The Association of Youths Against Malaria on our behalf.
GUS chairman Mr Saihou Jaiteh supervised the distribution and has produced a comprehensive report on the distribution.
